1989 Golden Demon Awards

By this time I had now swapped to a white undercoat in order to brighten things up a bit after the 1987 experience but still combined with the same Windsor and Newton Artists tube acrylics. I suppose this year represented a bit of a purple patch for me as not only had I managed three gold demons and the Slayer Sword, I had also managed to complete five pieces in as many months, pretty prolific for me!

Vignette Category.  Nurgle Chariot; Gold Demon and Slayer Sword Winner

Still with a few bits and pieces missing, to be repaired one day, possibly!

Standard Bearer Category.  Elf standard bearer not placed.

I was later told that this piece was apparently stretching the concept of a single miniature on a base a little too far!
The competition by now in its third year had moved to the larger assembly rooms in Derby. The full show  report can be found in White Dwarf 115.

  1. Hi Steve do you know of any photos on the net, taken at the assembly room venue golden demon awards? I went there with my friend on a coach from the Sheffield Games workshop branch as a young teenager. It would have been somewhere between 1988-1992. I know it moved from the assembly rooms at some point. All the best, Mark

    1. Hi Mark, unfortunately I do not, I suppose it was pre digital, all I really remember is that it was packed! I remember visiting to say hello to a few people in 1990 but the next time I entered in 1992 it was at the NEC

    2. Yes Mate, I am. 44 to be exact. But I have JUST started painting again. Woohoo...loving it even though I'm unimpressed with GW prices these days, nothing like a 30 year absence to send prices through the roof. Paint pots are small too but i have discoverd Valljo and army painter...not tried coted'arms yet. Aren't you still painting?
